CAT MOTHER...MONKEY MOTHER

Devotee comment:
As much as the conservative, 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps' philosophy is criticized ; each one of us has the free will to take shelter or not. Whether guru appears or disappears the vani remains the same
My reply:
The guru is also there reaching out. Srila Prabhupada described two kinds of mothers and asked which one the disciples thought was the best. First mother is the monkey mother... the baby clings to the back of the mother as she swings from tree to tree. And the other type of mother is the cat mother who firmly grasps the kitten by the back of the neck in her clenched teeth.
The disciples said the monkey mother. Srila Prabhupada said no... the cat mother. The baby is safer with the cat mother. The guru and disciple is like the cat and the kitten. This indicates that it is not by our strength alone... to simply hang on... but that the guru is holding on to the disciple.
