Sharmistha and the other young women thought Devayani had lost her life and ran away leaving Devayani in the bottom of the well.

There was no way for her to climb out.
That is the position in the material world.
There is no way to climb out, not by knowledge, not by renunciation, not by meditation, not by yoga. No way.

King Yayati was in the forest hunting and became a little thirsty.
He approached the well and found Devayani.
He reached his hand to her and was able to pull her out.

That is the only way out of the material world.
Take the mercy of the pure devotee, hold on and be pulled out
