From a discussion of women.
How do they fit into modern day society.
How do they fit into modern day society.
Nirav Patel: I agree with both you to an extent, so don't take this the wrong way, but a patriarchal form of society is "natural." The Puranas and Vedic epics clearly shows a patriarchal form of society in the context of varna-asrama principles. The reason why it won't work in modern times is because varna-asrama principles can no longer be maintained at the level shown in the Puranas, thus patriarchal societies won't work as portrayed.
Varna-asrama principles are meant to tame the "animal" nature of men and women; without that, as Kali-yuga progresses, humans will express their more primal nature. Feminism and what not will not help anybody.
Meena Devi Dasi said it the best, the only thing that can help anybody is hari-nama sankirtan.
Akincana Krishna Dasa: Good comment. I agree that there are huge limits to how much traditional varnashram culture can be established at present. I objected to the OP because I see the varnashram model as ideal, even if it's currently largely unobtainable. Because of Kali yuga, traditional gender roles may not entirely work at present, but when we reject their spirit entirely, the bad effects of Kali yuga just become more pronounced. Generally speaking, the rejection of traditional gender roles is only made possible because of contraception and abortion.
Meena Devi Dasi: Role playing is not a good way to approach this subject. The changes we all desire so much must come from change of consciousness. Simply enforcing codes and standards will not endure. And is also vulnerable to abuse. When the consciousness becomes cleansed of lust and exploitation then everything will adjust naturally.
